Version Update for IEC/EN 60598-1 General Safety Requirements for Luminaires

On May 2014, general safety requirements for luminaires IEC 60598-1:2014 (Ed. 8) was published, it replaced the previous version IEC 60598-1:2008 (Ed. 7). On January 2015, the EN 60598-1: 2015 was published, it supersedes EN 60598-1:2008+A11:2009, which will be withdrawn on 20 October 2017.

Main Update:

1. Update for standard: base on the construction requirement for different luminaire product, update part 2 standards of IEC/EN 60598.
2. Focus on LED luminaires, add the requirements of optics, electrical and constructions.
3. Update partly testing requirements for Class III products.

Details of update:

1) Base on previous, the mains update for standard are:

• IEC/EN 60598-2-6 (Luminaires with built-in transformers for tungsten filament lamps): this standard will be withdrawn after publication of this new version IEC/EN 60598-1, for all requirements listed in IEC 60598-2-6 have been incorporated in IEC/EN 60598-1 new version.
• IEC/EN 60598-2-20 (Lighting Chains): requirements of rope lights (also known as sealed lighting chains) will be excluded from the new version of this standard (Dop 2015-09-30). IEC/EN 60598-2-20 will just include lighting chain with/without fixed or detachable attachments.
• IEC/EN 60598-2-21 (Sealed lighting chains): requirements of rope lights (also known as sealed lighting chains) will be publication on 2015-09-30 as an individual standard.

2) Update for LED luminaires:

• Base on the LED source, the light source are classified as replaceable light source, non replaceable light source and non-user replaceable light source. And add relevant new requirements of label, manual and constructions.
• For the retinal blue light hazard of LED light source, add the risk group classification (RG0/RG1/RG2/RG3), relevant warning on label and manual, and installation guide for fixed luminaires.

3) Update for Class III products:

• Add the requirements of insulation between circuits for luminaires incorporating transformers or controlgears.
• Update the requirements of cross sectional area of external cables of Class III luminaires or SELV circuits in luminaires.
• No value of creepage distances and clearances are specified for working voltages below 25Vr.m.s.and 60Vd.c.
